The original building was opened in 1952, and the current building was oped in 1987. The gymnasium is one of the four primary venues for sumo tournaments in Japan, and a major tournament is held in Osaka every March. Seeing live sumo is an unforgettable experience you can't afford to miss. Other sporting events, such as basketball games and pro wrestling matched, are also held her. The prefectural government surprised everyone in April 2008 with its plan to demolish the gymnasium, but that just means sumo will move somewhere else in the city. Until then, come to Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium in March to experience live sumo.
